An Experimental Study of Effect of Vacuum Mixing on the Strength of Acrylic Bone

Abstract
Recently as cemented arthroplasty becomes more popular, interest in the methods which may improve the mechanical properties of acrylic bone cement has increased. It has been reported the mechanical properties of acrylic bone cement can be
improved
by
reduction of porosity.
The author made 15 specimens of ASTM standard with acrylic bone cement by two methods; hand mixing and vacuum mixing, The specimens were evaluated for their porosity by nake eyes and densitometer, and the mechanical properties were examined. The
results
were as follows: The porosity of the vacuum mixed specimens was markedly reduced than that of hand mixed specimens. The ultimate tensile strength test showed 42.90¡¾1.4 Mpa for vacuum mixed specimens with 22.45 improvement than 35.03¡¾1.5 Mpa in
hand
mixed specimens.
In conclusion, vacuum mixing technique is able to reduce the porosity and incerase tensile strength of the acrylic bone cement.
